Symphony of the Seas: the Busiest Port Day in Roatán

Thirty-nine calls a year, the most frequent Royal Caribbean ship on our island. And never once does she have the pier to herself. Here is what that changes about your day ashore.

Cruise port call

The Symphony of the Seas is the Royal Caribbean ship I see most often: 39 calls over the next twelve months, on a Wednesday or a Thursday. She is no longer the largest, she lost that title in 2024, but hers is the port day that needs the most preparation.

When she calls, and why her hours matter more than most

Wednesday 21 times, Thursday 17, Tuesday once. The day is reasonably regular. The hours are not, at all.

Across her 39 calls the register carries four different schedules: 8am to 5pm fifteen times, 7am to 4pm fifteen times, 7am to 3pm eight times, and 9am to 5pm once. Between the best and the worst case, that is two hours of shore time.

⚖️ I say on every page that only your own date counts. This is the page where it counts most. An hour copied from another sailing will either make you miss your excursion or have you leave two hours early for nothing.

The likely cause is her two homeports: Galveston in Texas and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, on six-, seven- and eight-night loops. The three other ships I keep a page for all sail from a single homeport and keep the same hours.

The busiest port day

She is never alone at the pier. Not once in 39 calls.

On a median call day the port of Roatán holds 14,290 cruise passengers, and she accounts for 39% of them. The rest arrive with the MSC Seascape (alongside her 17 times), the Carnival Liberty (16) and the Enchantment of the Seas (9).

Compare that with the MSC World America, who calls on Mondays and has the pier to herself 14 times out of 26. Those are two completely different days in Roatán, on the same island, at the same berth.

⚓ This is not a complaint about the ship, it is planning information. On a Wednesday when three ships empty at once, the western beaches and the best-known sites are full by 10am. The crowding calendar gives you the exact count for your date, and a small-group excursion earns its keep on days like these.

Her size, and the record she used to hold

1,184 ft (361 m) long, 154 ft (47 m) wide, 17 decks of which 11 carry cabins, for a gross tonnage of about 228,081. She entered service in 2018.

She belongs to the Oasis Plus class, the one that held the title of largest cruise ship in the world before the Icon of the Seas arrived in 2024. I wrote about what that jump in scale actually represents in Icon of the Seas vs Titanic.

Her passenger-to-space ratio is 36, the highest of the four ships I keep a page for: that is the volume available per person, and it is still above the Icon’s.

On capacity: 5,518 at double occupancy, up to 6,780, plus 2,394 crew.

⚓ Of her five sister ships, only one calls at Roatán: Harmony of the Seas, six Tuesdays between May and September 2027. The others, never.

Where does she sail?

Two homeports, Galveston and Fort Lauderdale, on six-, seven- and eight-night Caribbean loops.

⚓ Let me be straight about what this page is good for. Royal Caribbean publishes the full itinerary, better than I ever could. I have one call on that programme. What I have that they do not is what happens during that one day, from the ground.

What to do on her port day

A busy day is better prepared than improvised. This is exactly the day when a small group leaving early, with someone who knows the pier’s real hours, beats a coach of forty arriving when everyone else is already there.

The numbers, read from the port register
