Pick Mayan Princess Beach & Dive Resort. Frequent travelers say the food is better, and the buffet has a new theme every night: no two dinners feel the same. You stay in a condo or a villa.

Media Luna or Henry Morgan?

Two all-inclusives, two moods. Henry Morgan sits on West Bay beach, Media Luna is tucked away in its own bay. My advice:

Want the lively zone?

Pick Henry Morgan Hotel and Beach Resort. It is on West Bay beach: restaurants, bars and resorts close by, and a water taxi right on the beach to go into town. Kayaks are available.

Want peace and quiet?

Pick Media Luna Resort & Spa, also announced as Sol by Meliá. A small private beach at the bottom of a valley, with two half-moon strips of sand. To go out, you need a taxi. Kayaks are available.

The Roatán hotels that are not all-inclusive

They often cost less per night and more once you are there. That is a good trade if you plan to eat out, dive every day or cook — and a bad one if you wanted to stop opening your wallet. Every card states its meal plan.

Most travelers want to stay on West Bay Beach for the white sand and easy reef access, but West End offers a bohemian boutique vibe, while the East End provides total seclusion.

Unlike massive destinations where resorts are spread out randomly, Roatán's hotel scene is very concentrated. The snorkeling is world-class everywhere, but your experience changes drastically depending on the zone:

  • West Bay: The premium strip. This is where you'll find the classic beachfront resorts like Mayan Princess and Infinity Bay. It's bustling, beautiful, and the reef is literally steps from the beach.
