🔴 Neither dock is within walking distance of West Bay, and the two are not equally far. From Mahogany Bay the ride is roughly 55 minutes each way, close to two hours of your port call, before you have swum anything. That single line is the most useful thing on this page.

The beach you saw in the brochure needs a taxi, agreed in US dollars before you get in, with the return time fixed.

The Town Center at Coxen Hole and the grounds at Mahogany Bay are both built to keep passengers spending right there on the dock. Handy for a postcard shot, but it isn’t the real Roatán. The moment you cross the terminal exit, the authentic island begins: the reef, the jungle, the beaches, the island culture. And that’s exactly where I take you, no matter which port you arrive at.

Berth 1 vs Berth 2 at the Port of Roatán: which one is yours?

The Port of Roatán, in Coxen Hole, has two main berths, and the difference decides how your morning starts.

Berth 1 is the main quay, the one attached directly to the Town Center. It takes the largest ships afloat, Royal Caribbean’s Oasis class included. If you are sailing on something enormous, this is almost certainly you.

Berth 2 takes mid-size ships, and it takes the overflow on a busy day: a second NCL or MSC hull when Berth 1 is already occupied.

A third case exists and catches people out. On the fullest days, ships that cannot get a quay anchor offshore and tender passengers in. That is a boat ride before your day even starts, and it eats the first hour. The ship schedule on this page tells you which days those are.

Either berth walks you straight into the Town Center: duty-free shops, bars, restaurants, a pool. It is built to keep you on the dock, and it works. Fine for a quick postcard. It is not Roatán.

Walking off Berth 1 to meet your guide

The real island starts the moment you clear the terminal gate. The route:

  1. Step off the ship at Berth 1.
  2. Cross the Town Center shopping area, following the signs for the exit.
  3. Head for the terminal’s main doors, marked Gate 1.
  4. Outside the gate, walk down the main street for a few minutes — it is all downhill.

What to do in Roatán, no matter your port

How many cruise ports are there in Roatán?
Two. Mahogany Bay (which Carnival calls "Isla Tropicale"), operated by Carnival Corporation, and the Port of Roatán at Coxen Hole (the Town Center pier). Your ship docks at one or the other depending on your cruise line.
Which Roatán port will my ship dock at?
Carnival, Celebrity and Princess dock at Mahogany Bay (Isla Tropicale). Royal Caribbean, Norwegian (NCL), MSC and the luxury lines (Viking, Oceania, Regent, Crystal) dock at the Port of Roatán at Coxen Hole. Check your ship's name to know which one.
What's the difference between Mahogany Bay and the Port of Roatán?
Mahogany Bay (Isla Tropicale) is a private Carnival complex on the south shore, with a developed beach and a chairlift. The Port of Roatán, at Coxen Hole, is the island's main pier with the Town Center (shops, restaurants, pool). Both are on the island of Roatán; only the dock changes.
Which Roatán port is busier?
The Port of Roatán at Coxen Hole, because Royal Caribbean, the line with the biggest presence in Roatán, docks there, along with NCL and MSC. Mahogany Bay mainly receives ships from the Carnival family.
Is it safe to leave the cruise port in Roatán?
Absolutely. I pick you up right at the terminal exit (whichever port), we travel as a small private group, and I've known the island since 2014. Far more reassuring than heading off alone in a taxi.
Will I make it back in time for my ship?
