The excursion

Fridays in Roatán mean this day right here

Five stops. One epic day. Zero compromises.

This is THE Pigeon Cay tour with Patrice, Roatan Québécois — not some generic version sold on the pier to a rushed cruise passenger. Roatán the way you deserve it, run by someone who lives on the island year-round and hand-picks every stop for its impact.

Know El Cielo in Cozumel? Welcome to the VIP version. 🦈

Cozumel’s El Cielo in Mexico is world-famous: translucent turquoise water, starfish, a sandbar made for photos. Gorgeous, yes. If you’ve been, you know. If you were planning to go someday — read this carefully.

This is the experience you were chasing in Cozumel and nobody managed to deliver. Roatán has it. Satisfaction guaranteed.

The travelers who’ve done El Cielo and then discover Pigeon Cay all say the same thing: “Why didn’t I start here?

🪸 Roatán owns El Cielo, anytime. You searched “swim with nurse sharks,” you searched “snorkel El Cielo Cozumel” — you just arrived at the destination.

What makes this day different

  • 🦈 Free-swimming nurse sharks — not in a pen. You swim with them in their natural habitat, in shallow, safe water.
  • 🦐 Fresh shrimp ceviche prepared on board while we cruise.
  • 🧊 Well-stocked cooler: 🍺 beers · 🍹 cocktails · 🥃 spirits · ⚡ energy drinks · 🥤 sodas · 💧 water.
  • 🚤 A safe boat built for sea excursions — no more fishing boats that pitch all day and turn your stomach.

The full itinerary — 5 stops, 1 premium day

1️⃣ Fort Morgan Cay — the pirate history

We start at a historic cay: Fort Morgan, a relic of the Caribbean pirates era. Henry Morgan himself stopped here in the 17th century. A short landing, photos, some historical context — and the water’s already turquoise.

2️⃣ Mysterious shipwreck — underwater exploration

An underwater shipwreck you can reach while snorkeling, alive with tropical fish. You swim above it, and you can free-dive down to get a closer look. Pure magic for underwater photos.

3️⃣ Pigeon Cay — swim with nurse sharks 🦈

The highlight of the day. The Pigeon Cay sandbar is one of the only places in the world where you can swim freely with wild nurse sharks, in shallow, crystal-clear water. A full safety briefing before you get in. It’s peaceful, magical and unforgettable — even people who were scared of sharks come out transformed.

4️⃣ Barbareta — Jade Beach & stunning coral 🪸

The island of Barbareta hides a jade-colored beach ringed by living coral reefs. Great snorkeling, powdery white sand, a deserted-island feel. This is where we enjoy the fresh shrimp ceviche prepared on board.

5️⃣ Wild mangrove — the boat crossing

We finish with a quiet cruise through the wild mangrove — a unique, vivid-green ecosystem full of seabirds and juvenile fish. The perfect transition from adventure back to shore.

➕ Option: Lobster lunch in Santa Helena 🦞

If you take the option (and you should), we stop in the fishing village of Santa Helena for real fresh garlic lobster, caught that very morning. An authentic experience that ordinary tourists never see. $20 USD, and you’ll remember this meal for a long time.

The boat — the difference that changes everything

You may have heard: similar tours in Roatán are often run on modified fishing boats that pitch, toss you around and make you seasick. Not with us.

Our boat is DESIGNED for sea excursions: wide hull, excellent stability in open water, generous shade, comfortable seating, a safe boarding ladder for the water, and room for the cooler and the onboard kitchen.

You finish the day relaxed and feeling great — not sore and beaten up.

What’s included in the $200 USD

  • Dedicated boat for the whole day (captain + crew)
  • Local guide narrating in English, French or Spanish (me, Patrice) the whole way
  • 5 complete stops: Fort Morgan · Shipwreck · Pigeon Cay · Barbareta · Mangrove
  • Snorkeling gear (fins, mask, snorkel, flotation belt)
  • Fresh shrimp ceviche prepared on board
  • Well-stocked cooler: beers, cocktails, spirits, energy drinks, sodas, water
  • Pickup at your hotel/Airbnb or the cruise pier

What’s NOT included

  • 🦞 Lobster lunch in Santa Helena (optional but highly recommended)
  • 💸 Tip for the captain + crew (up to you, if you enjoyed the day)

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it like El Cielo in Cozumel? How does it compare?
This is the experience you were chasing at El Cielo — only better. El Cielo in Cozumel is gorgeous, but here's the reality: 5 minutes in a boat, a single stop, big crowds, no sharks. Pigeon Cay in Roatán is a full day (8–9 hrs), 5 different stops, wild nurse sharks swimming free, a dedicated premium boat, a well-stocked bar and homemade ceviche. Roatán turns El Cielo into just one small part of the day. Satisfaction guaranteed.
Swim with nurse sharks — is it really safe?
Yes, 100%. Nurse sharks are among the most peaceful creatures in the ocean — they don't attack humans and they don't bite. I walk you through the full safety briefing in English, French or Spanish before we get in the water. It's on par with swimming with nurse sharks in the Bahamas, Belize or Florida — except here you've got a local guide who's lived on the island since 2014 and a premium boat.
Is swimming with nurse sharks dangerous?
Not at all. Nurse sharks are among the most peaceful creatures in the ocean — they don't attack humans and they don't bite (unless you really harass them, which we don't). I go over the whole safety briefing with you — in English, French or Spanish — before we get in the water. A lot of my guests who were scared of sharks come back saying it was THE most memorable thing of their whole trip.
Do I need to know how to swim for this tour?
Ideally yes, but the Pigeon Cay sandbar is shallow (about 3 to 5 ft) — you can stand up in it. We provide flotation belts and fins. If you're really not comfortable in the water, tell me ahead of time and we'll adapt your day.
What kind of boat is it, exactly? I had a bad experience in Roatán on a fishing boat that pitched all day.
Our boat is DESIGNED for sea excursions: wide hull, excellent stability, shade, comfortable seating, a safe boarding ladder. Nothing like the modified fishing boats you see elsewhere that toss you around all day. It changes EVERYTHING — you finish the day feeling great, not seasick or sore.
Is the garlic lobster in Santa Helena mandatory?
No, it's an add-on. But honestly: it's FRESH lobster caught that very morning, cooked in garlic in an authentic fishing village. You get an experience most tourists never even see. Almost everyone says yes. You decide on the spot.
What's included in the $200 USD?
The dedicated boat for the whole day, your local guide (me, Patrice) narrating in English, French or Spanish, all the stops (Fort Morgan, the shipwreck, Pigeon Cay, Barbareta, mangrove), fresh shrimp ceviche prepared on board, the snorkeling gear (fins, mask, snorkel), flotation belts, and the well-stocked cooler: 🍺 beers, 🍹 cocktails, 🥃 spirits, ⚡ energy drinks, 🥤 sodas and 💧 water.
What's NOT included?
The lobster lunch in Santa Helena (optional, I highly recommend it), and a tip for the captain and crew if you enjoyed the day (entirely up to you).
How long does the day last?
8 to 9 hours, with an early-morning departure so we reach Pigeon Cay when the light is perfect and the sharks are active. We head back in the late afternoon, just before the sun sets on the ride home.
Where do you leave from? Do you pick me up at my hotel?
I pick you up at your hotel or Airbnb (West Bay, West End, Sandy Bay, French Harbour). For cruise passengers, I come straight to the pier. The boat departs from the east side of the island — a quick 30–40 min transfer, with a grab-and-go breakfast on the way.
When do the departures run?
Every Friday as a regular group departure. Other days by request (private excursion, different rate — message me).
Can it be combined with a hotel stay?
Yes — that's my specialty. I handle your Roatán stay (Henry Morgan, Infinity Bay, Mayan Princess, etc.) plus your guided excursions in one single package, with no agency fees. [See my recommended hotels →](/en/hotels/)
