Getting in the water at least once. Visitors who spend their whole stay on a beach chair leave without having seen what the island actually is. Even a first-timer who has never used a mask can float over the reef wall in calm water. That is the thing people regret skipping.

March through August is the driest stretch and the calmest water, which is what matters for snorkeling. October and November are the wettest. Can you walk to the beach from the Roatán cruise port?

It depends which port your ship uses. Isla Tropicale, the terminal most people still call Mahogany Bay, has its own beach inside the port area that you can reach on foot or by the chairlift. Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole has no beach within walking distance, so West Bay is a taxi ride away. Check your itinerary for the terminal name before you plan the day.

Why is it so expensive to fly to Roatán?

Roatán is served by a small international airport with a limited number of carriers and seats, and most of them fly only a few days a week. Less competition and less capacity means fares hold up, especially in the winter high season. Do you flush toilet paper in Roatán?
