Every Atlantic storm since 1851

The 2,004 tropical storms and hurricanes NOAA has recorded in the Atlantic since 1851, with their full tracks and how close each one came to Roatán. Move over a track to see which one it is.

Three questions this tool answers: has one already come close? in which month? and that one storm — where did it go?

Matching storms

Month it passed

MITCH was a category 5 — but a category 2 when it passed Roatán. This chooses which of the two every count uses.

El Niño years are quieter here: 0.40 storms a year against 2.14 in La Niña, over the satellite era.

Since

Before 1966, a storm that crossed no ship went unrecorded. The older the window, the more it under-counts.

Move over a track to identify it

Old counts are incomplete. Before satellites, a storm that crossed no ship went unrecorded, so the decades from 1851 to 1950 are under-counted. Comparing 1870 with 2020 on this map would compare the record, not the weather.

Where this data comes from

HURDAT2, the National Hurricane Center database: position, wind and pressure every six hours, 1851 to 2025. It is a work of the United States government, so it is public domain and free to reuse. We did not copy it: it is re-downloaded and recomputed, and a check verifies that our compact format returns exactly the same points as the original.

What this tool does not do yet

It draws and it identifies. What comes next, in order:

  • Filters: by period, by intensity, by month, by distance to the island, and by name.
  • A share link that replays the selection — without it, nobody can cite what they saw.
  • An export of the storms on screen, because that is what separates a picture from an instrument.
