Costa Maya cruise port, in one paragraph
Costa Maya is a cruise port on Mexico’s southern Caribbean coast, in the state of Quintana Roo, next to the fishing village of Mahahual. It has a single cruise pier, a long T that reaches out over the reef from the terminal, so every ship that calls here docks at the same place. The port is owned by Royal Caribbean, and ships from other cruise lines call there too.
Who owns the port, and why it matters
Royal Caribbean writes it on its own website: it is the new owner of the Port of Costa Maya. That changes nothing for your schedule, which lists every published call whatever the line. It mainly explains why the terminal, its shops and its excursions are organized around the cruise lines.
Mayan ruins near Costa Maya
The pier has no ruins of its own: the “Maya temple” you see near the terminal is a replica. The real sites are inland, and they are the most searched excursion from this port.
| site | from the pier (straight line) | what to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Chacchoben | about 64 km | the classic cruise-day ruin: jungle temples, a short walk, back in time for all aboard |
| Kohunlich | about 121 km | bigger and much quieter, famous for its stucco masks; a full day, tight on a short call |
Go with a tour that works around your ship’s hours, and keep a margin for the road back.
Same ship, next stop: Roatán
Many Western Caribbean itineraries that call at Costa Maya also call at Roatán, Honduras, often in the same week. The two days are very different: Costa Maya is a quiet coast built around one terminal, Roatán is a whole island sitting on the second-largest barrier reef in the world.
Costa Maya and Roatán: the same cruise, measured
We read the itinerary of every cruise that calls at Roatán, one by one. 58% of them also call at Costa Maya.

| Cozumel | 1,001 of 1,068 | 94% | 53 |

Cozumel is often the stop before or after: its cruise port schedule shows which of its three piers your ship uses. And if your ship continues to Roatán, the Roatán cruise ship schedule tells you which of its two terminals you will use and how many ships share the island with you that day. That is where I live, and where I meet my guests: small private groups, back at the ship with margin.

Dates and times come from published cruise itineraries and can change on the day. Costa Maya has a single pier, so every ship docks at the same place.
