Belize City cruise port, in one paragraph

Belize City is a tender port. The sea is too shallow for cruise ships, so they anchor several kilometres offshore and bring passengers in by tender to the Fort Street Tourism Village, at the tip of the old town. From there the town is on foot, and the Maya ruins, cave tubing, the zoo and the cayes are reached by organized day trips.

Do cruise ships dock in Belize City?
No. Belize City is a tender port: the water is too shallow for cruise ships, so they anchor offshore and bring passengers ashore by tender to the Fort Street Tourism Village, at the edge of the old town. Count the tender time at both ends of your day.
What can I do in Belize City without an excursion?
In town, on foot from the Tourism Village: the Museum of Belize, the Baron Bliss Lighthouse, the Swing Bridge, St. John's Cathedral and the House of Culture. Most of what makes Belize famous, the Maya ruins, cave tubing and the cayes, is an hour or more away and is done on an organized day trip.
How far are the Maya ruins from the Belize cruise port?
Altun Ha is the closest, about 35 km from the tender landing in a straight line, roughly an hour by road. Xunantunich and the ATM cave are much further west, near the Guatemalan border, and fill a whole port day.
