1. Location: West Bay vs a bay of your own

Henry Morgan sits directly on West Bay beach, the lively zone of the island. Many resorts and restaurants are in West Bay, so going out at night is easy. Most bars and restaurants close around 11 pm. You can also take a water taxi straight from the beach: the boats shuttle back and forth and run only to West End and West Bay, which makes town very easy to reach.

Media Luna has its small private beach and is isolated, in complete peace, at the bottom of a valley with two half-moon beaches. It is the opposite of West Bay: you come here for the calm.

Beach vendors. Because tourism is concentrated in West Bay, you will find roaming beach vendors there. At Media Luna there are none: the place is very quiet and you can walk around without anyone trying to sell you anything.

2. Going out at night: what it really means

At Media Luna the hotel buffet is your base. To go out, day or night, plan 1 hour by taxi to West End or West Bay, or 30 minutes to Camp Bay. You need a rental car or a taxi, and a taxi to reach Media Luna costs about $50.

If you know you will want to dine out every evening, weigh that carefully. If you want to do nothing at all, it is an advantage.

3. Snorkeling and diving

In my view, both hotels are in the top 3 places in Roatán to snorkel from the beach, and even dive from the beach. Kayaks are available at both.

What changes is the scene:

  • In West Bay, the water is busy: jet skis, lots of snorkeling boats, dive boats.
  • At Media Luna, you only see the two boats of the dive center: they leave in the morning to dive, come back between meals and head out again.

4. What travelers say

Media Luna3.8 / 5160
Henry Morgan3.5 / 5267

Each source has its own score, so I don’t average them. Media Luna also has 4.3 / 5 on Google (556 reviews), and TripAdvisor shows between 4.3 and 4.4 depending on the site version, on about forty reviews. The hotel was taken over by the Meliá group and announced as Sol by Meliá Roatán: the most recent reviews are the ones that count.

5. What it costs from Canada

I leave prices out of this article because they change with the inventory. Both pages show the real departures from our inventory, by departure city, with what is included. Open the Media Luna page and the Henry Morgan page.
