Gumbalimba Roatán: the walk, the price, and whether it's worth it

The entrance sign of Gumbalimba Park in Roatán, The Untamed Roatan, under the palm trees

If you are staying in West Bay and wondering how to get to Gumbalimba, the answer is simpler than most websites make it sound: you walk there, along the beach.

That is what I tell people on the island. No taxi to haggle over, no shuttle to wait for. You step out of your hotel, down onto the sand, and walk.

One thing to settle right away, because the confusion is easy to fall into: arriving by the beach does not get you in for free. The walk is free. The park is not.

What it costs, and what that covers

$35 USD per person (checked 4 September 2026).

That is an entry fee: it opens the park and its beach to you. Add-on activities, the zipline for instance, are billed separately.

Note the currency: US dollars, as everywhere on Roatán. If you are budgeting in Canadian dollars or euros, work out the difference before you reach the gate.

From a West Bay hotel, you walk it along the beach

It is the shortest route and the nicest one. Out of your hotel, down to the sand, and go.

Allow 15 minutes from the West Bay hotel strip, at a normal walking pace.

Fifteen minutes is short. That is exactly why I recommend walking over taking a taxi: in the time it takes to agree on a fare, you would already be there.

A few things worth doing before you set off:

  • Bring water. The walk is in full sun.
  • Sandals are fine, but carry something you can walk the park trails in.
  • Go in the morning. By afternoon the sand is hot and the ships have sailed.

Coming off a cruise ship

If you are arriving by sea the maths changes. This is no longer a stroll, it is a transfer, and your real constraint is all-aboard time.

The two piers are not the same distance out, and the gap decides your day:

Mahogany Bay55 minutes

Do the arithmetic before you commit. From Mahogany Bay the round trip eats close to two hours out of a call that runs five or six. That leaves you roughly half a day on the ground, transfer included, for a park most people walk in two hours.

From Coxen Hole it is a far more reasonable proposition.

What you actually see

Gumbalimba is a landscaped private park, not a wild reserve. You walk cut trails through dense planting, and the grounds open onto a groomed beach. You will also see it called the Gumbalimba preserve, which is the same place.

What that means in practice: it is a comfortable, family-friendly outing with no physical difficulty. It is not a hike, and it is not wildlife watching in the strict sense. If what you want is Roatán’s raw nature, this is not where it lives.

The beach and the snorkeling

The park fronts the water, and that is part of the appeal: you can pair the visit with a swim without going anywhere.

For serious snorkeling, though, West Bay itself and the West End wall are better. The reef sits closer in and there is more alive on it.

So is it worth it?

Honestly, it depends on your trip.

It is worth it if you are staying in West Bay, you have half a day with nothing planned, and you are travelling with kids. The walk is part of the pleasure, and the park is built to be easy.

It is worth less if you are docking at Mahogany Bay. Two hours of road for two hours of park, on a call that runs five or six, is a hard case to argue, and Roatán has other things to offer in that same format.

What I will not tell you is that it is unmissable. It is not. It is a good outing, well kept, at a price you can weigh against what you are actually after.

Where it is on the island

Gumbalimba sits in the West Bay area, at the western tip of Roatán, along the same stretch of beach as the big resorts in that corner of the island.

Doing Gumbalimba with me

If you would rather not put the day together yourself, I run a land day at $95 USD per person that takes in Gumbalimba.

  • Gumbalimba: the park, and the entry is included in the price. Nothing to pay at the gate.
  • Sol y Mar Beach Club: the beach, in the morning. Or, if you prefer, Daniel Johnson’s eco park, your pick.
  • Roatan Island Brewery: lunch and craft beers, which are not included.

Transport and guide included, in English, French or Spanish, and it runs every day, not only on Wednesdays like the island tour.

⚠️ If you go under your own steam, the other calculation applies: the walk from West Bay is free, but the park entry is still payable on site, at the price listed above.

What changes compared with walking there yourself: you are no longer stuck in the one area. Gumbalimba can be strung together with something else in the same day, and you have someone on hand to ask.

The island tour and the zipline transfer both work on the same principle. If it is the water you are after, there is snorkeling at West Bay and Pigeon Cay.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get into Gumbalimba for free by walking in along the beach?

No. Walking from West Bay is the shortest way in, not a free way in: the entry fee applies however you arrive.

Do you need to book an organized excursion to visit Gumbalimba?

No. You can go on your own and pay at the gate, at the price listed above. The difference with my $95 USD land day is that the park entry is included, so there is nothing to pay on site. An organized excursion mostly earns its keep if you are coming off a cruise ship with limited hours.

Can Patrice take me to Gumbalimba?

Yes. I run a land day at $95 USD per person that takes in Gumbalimba, Sol y Mar and the island brewery, guided in English, French or Spanish, and the park entry is included in that price. It runs every day.

Is Gumbalimba walkable from a West Bay hotel?

Yes, and it is the easiest way to get there: you follow the beach. It is what I tell anyone staying in that area.
