Fire at Fantasy Island Roatán: What Really Happened

Fire at Fantasy Island Roatán: What Really Happened

If you follow the news out of Roatán — or if you’d booked a stay at the Fantasy Island Beach Resort — you may have seen the images: on the night of March 2, 2026, a major fire tore through much of this landmark resort in French Harbour. I live on the island year-round, so here’s the clear, verified picture, with no sensationalism: what burned, what was saved, and what it means if you’re planning to come to Roatán.

What happened at Fantasy Island in Roatán?

On the night of March 2, 2026, a fire broke out at the Fantasy Island Beach Resort & Marina in French Harbour, on Roatán’s south coast. The resort was lightly occupied that night: roughly 60 people (guests and staff) were on site. Honduras’s Cuerpo de Bomberos (fire brigade) worked for several hours to bring the flames under control.

The most important point: no injuries, no fatalities. Everyone was evacuated in time.

What burned — and what was saved?

This is where the headlines contradict each other: some outlets talk about “90% destroyed,” while the firefighters themselves say they saved about 60% of the hotel. Here’s the breakdown as reported by the Honduran press:

Hit by the fire:

  • 36 of the 108 rooms
  • the lobby and reception
  • the restaurant and kitchen
  • three bars, the nightclub, the conference area
  • shops and beach structures (palapas)

Spared:

  • the dive centre (intact)
  • roughly two-thirds of the accommodations

According to guest accounts, staff shouted “Everybody out, get out of here!” and the fire reportedly started in the kitchen area before spreading. The exact cause is still under investigation.

Will Fantasy Island reopen?

As of now, the hotel hasn’t announced a reopening date. Part of the resort is heavily damaged and will have to be rebuilt; another part, along with the dive centre, was spared. I’ll update this article as soon as an official announcement comes out — that’s the advantage of having someone on the ground.

Is Roatán still a safe destination?

Yes. Let’s be clear: a hotel fire is a one-off material disaster, not a signal about the island’s safety. It happens everywhere in the world, in every tourist country. Roatán is still the same beautiful island: the Mesoamerican reef, West Bay, world-class diving, warm people. The difference, when you book with a local guide, is that if something happens, you have someone on the island who picks up the phone — not a call centre on the other side of the world.

Where to stay in Roatán instead of Fantasy Island?

Fantasy Island was especially popular with divers and all-inclusive packages. Here are the resorts I personally recommend and know inside out:

Good news for divers: Fantasy Island’s dive centre was spared, and more importantly, Roatán is overflowing with dive sites and operators. Whether you’re certified or want to try your first dive, I’ll coordinate it for you in English, French or Spanish. Discover my excursions and reef snorkeling →
