360 Aerial Tour of Roatán — See the Island from the Sky (Live in Alpha!)
If you’ve spent time watching our webcams gazing at the turquoise water of West Bay, you’ve already wondered what it would feel like to fly over the island in a drone. Well, now you can.
We just launched our 360 aerial tour of Roatán in alpha. It’s not 100 % polished yet — there are technical challenges, a few bugs to iron out and some glitches tied to weather conditions (wind especially). But it works. And it’s breathtaking.
Why We’re Showing It Before It’s Perfect
Simple: Roatán from the sky is too beautiful to keep locked in development. The aerial panoramas of the coral reef, the West Bay beaches stretching endlessly, the coastal villages of West End and the south side of the island reveal a beauty you’ll never see from the ground.
We made the choice to share it with you in alpha, before we’ve solved every stability and rendering issue. Yes, you might see a few glitches. Yes, strong winds can disrupt certain sections of the aerial footage. But no — it doesn’t ruin the magic of a view that very few people have ever had of this island.
What You’ll Discover
The 360 tour shows you:
- West Bay from the sky — Roatán’s most photographed beach, but entire with the reef and turquoise bay in one panoramic view.
- The coral reef — the world’s second-largest barrier reef, seen from above. You’ll understand why divers talk about this place with so much passion.
- West End and Half Moon Bay — the bohemian village from a perspective no webcam can capture.
- The south side of the island — Coco View Resort, dense jungle, hidden coves.
All in immersive 360, which means you can look in any direction — up, down, behind you — and you’re there.
The Challenges We Face
Roatán’s winds are no joke. During certain sections of filming, the winds were strong enough to destabilize the drone. You can see it in some sequences: a slight wobble, a horizon that dances a bit. We’re working to minimize it, but for now, it’s a reality of local conditions.
There are also visual artifacts in a few sections (flickering pixels, noise) related to compression and processing of high-resolution 360 videos. Not a problem for the big picture, but noticeable if you’re looking.
Why It’s Worth It Despite the Imperfections
Because seeing Roatán this way changes your perspective. The challenges we have aren’t incompetence — they’re the reality of capturing a windy tropical island in 360 panoramic video. And the imperfections don’t ruin the show.
You’ll understand why I’ve lived here since 2014, why divers keep coming back, why it’s not just a tourist destination for me.
