Mahogany Bay, Isla Tropicale, Roatán — what exactly is it?

If you’re planning your port day, you’ve probably seen a few different names and you’re wondering whether they’re all the same place. The short answer: yes. Mahogany Bay is Roatán’s Carnival-owned cruise port, on the south coast of the island. In 2023, Carnival rebranded it “Isla Tropicale” in its marketing. Same pier, same beach, same chairlift — two names, one place.

And Mahogany Bay is not a separate island: it’s very much on the island of Roatán, Honduras. It’s one of the island’s two cruise ports — the other being the Port of Roatán at Coxen Hole, where Royal Caribbean and Norwegian dock.

Where the Mahogany Bay port is located

The port sits near Dixon Cove, on the southeast side of the island. It’s a complex run by Carnival Corporation: a developed beach (Mahogany Beach), a paid chairlift (the “Magical Flying Beach Chair”), shops and a lagoon. The ships that dock here are mostly Carnival, Celebrity and Princess. If your ship is a Royal Caribbean, a Norwegian (NCL), an MSC or a Disney, you’ll disembark instead at the island’s other port, the Port of Roatán at Coxen Hole.

It’s pretty, but it’s designed to keep the ship’s 4,000 passengers inside the perimeter, spending on site. The real Roatán — the reef, the jungle, the villages, the culture — starts the moment you step past the gate.

Step outside the port: your 3 guided excursions

Instead of paying a premium for a mass-market excursion sold by the ship, I take you out in a small private group to experience the island for real. Choose your adventure:

🤿 West Bay Snorkeling — $95 USD

The best shore-accessible reef on Roatán. We swim over living coral, tropical fish and, with a little luck, turtles and rays. Perfect for all levels. See the snorkeling excursion →

🍻 Island Tour + Microbrewery — $95 USD

The scenic tour of Roatán: viewpoints, beaches, local life, and a stop at the island’s microbrewery. The best way to understand where you’ve just landed. See the island tour →

🦈 Pigeon Cay — $200 USD

The signature outing: swim with nurse sharks and set foot on a slice-of-paradise sandbar. A day your fellow cruisers will envy. See Pigeon Cay →

Cruise passengers: Pigeon Cay is offered only to groups of 5 or more on a cruise call. For 1 to 4 people on a cruise, I recommend snorkeling at West Bay or the island tour.

Your port-day itinerary

Everything is built around your ship’s schedule — not the other way around:

  1. 9 a.m. — Pickup at the port. I’m waiting for you at the Mahogany Bay / Isla Tropicale exit, sign in hand.
  2. Flexible route. We head to your chosen excursion. The route is customizable: we can add a photo stop, a viewpoint, some fresh fruit along the way.
  3. Included by default. Depending on the excursion: beach access and snorkeling from shore, or a guided island tour. Zero hard selling — everything is clear up front.
  4. Options on request (payable on site): scuba diving, ziplining, jet ski, glass-bottom boat, a sloth encounter.
  5. Guaranteed return. I get you back to port at least 1 to 1.5 hours before boarding. You climb back on board relaxed, not stressed.

This is exactly the moment to book — choose your excursion, your ship and your port hours in the form below. 👇

Book with the ship or independently?

Excursions sold on board are convenient, but pricey, in big groups, and often in English only. By booking directly with me:

  • 💰 Better price — no middleman and no cruise-line commission.
  • 👥 Small private group — not 50 people behind a flag.
  • 🇨🇦 Personal service — guided personally by Patrice, a resident since 2014.
  • Guaranteed return to the ship — or a full refund if your ship can’t dock.

The only rule: book ahead, because I take just one group per port call.

Which ships dock at Mahogany Bay?

Since Mahogany Bay (Isla Tropicale) is run by Carnival Corporation, it’s mostly its ships that dock here:

  • 🎉 Carnival — Liberty, Paradise, Celebration, Sunshine, Breeze, Spirit, Vista, Mardi Gras.
  • 💎 Princess — Regal Princess, Sun Princess.
  • Celebrity — Celebrity Xcel.

You’ll find the full list of ships in the selector on the booking form. If your ship is a Royal Caribbean, a Norwegian (NCL) or an MSC, you dock instead at the Port of Roatán at Coxen Hole.

When ships dock & weather

Calls at Mahogany Bay mostly take place from October to April, during the day (generally 8 a.m.–5 p.m.). Roatán’s climate is warm year-round (26–31 °C / 79–88 °F), with often calm seas on the West Bay side — perfect for snorkeling during your port day.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are Mahogany Bay and Isla Tropicale the same place?
Yes. Mahogany Bay is Roatán's Carnival-owned cruise port, on the south coast near Dixon Cove. In 2023, Carnival rebranded it "Isla Tropicale" in its marketing. It's the same pier, the same beach (Mahogany Beach) and the same chairlift (the Magical Flying Beach Chair) — just two names for the same spot.
Is Mahogany Bay on Roatán island?
Yes. Mahogany Bay / Isla Tropicale is a port complex on the island of Roatán, Honduras. It's not a separate island: it's one of Roatán's two cruise ports (the other being the Port of Roatán at Coxen Hole, used by Royal Caribbean and NCL).
Is it safe to leave the Mahogany Bay port?
Absolutely. I pick you up right at the port exit, we travel in a small private group, and I've known this island inside out since 2014. You're in the hands of a local guide from start to finish — far more reassuring than heading off alone in a taxi.
Will I make it back in time for my ship?
Guaranteed. I set our departures around your ship's exact schedule and get you back to port at least 1 to 1.5 hours before boarding. And if your ship can't dock at Roatán (weather, force majeure), your deposit is refunded in full.
Which excursions can I do from Mahogany Bay?
The three most popular ones: snorkeling at West Bay (the best reef you can reach from shore), the island tour with a microbrewery stop, and Pigeon Cay to swim with nurse sharks. Note: on a cruise call, Pigeon Cay is offered only to groups of 5 or more. You pick your excursion right in the booking form.
Can you snorkel near Mahogany Bay?
There's a bit of snorkeling in the port's bay, but Roatán's best reef is at West Bay, about 30 minutes away. I take you there in a small group to swim over living coral, tropical fish and sometimes turtles — no comparison to the snorkeling at the port.
How do I book a guided excursion from Mahogany Bay?
Fill out the booking form on this page: choose your excursion, tell me your cruise line and ship name, and your port hours. I get your request right away and confirm everything with you personally.
